Flooring Calculator

How much laminate, vinyl plank or hardwood flooring to buy, in square feet and boxes, with an allowance for cuts.

How this is calculated

The floor area is length times width. The extra allowance is added for planks cut at walls and doorways and for boards with defects; about 10 percent is usual for straight installs, and more for diagonal layouts or rooms with many corners.

Flooring is sold by the box, and each box prints the area it covers. The number of boxes is the area with the extra, divided by the coverage per box, rounded up.

With meters, the area is in square meters and the box coverage should be in square meters too.

Limits

A rectangular room. For an L-shaped room or a closet, work out each rectangle and add them. Some products need extra for pattern matching or a staggered layout; follow the maker's instructions.
