Raised Bed Soil Calculator

How much soil fills a raised garden bed, in cubic feet, cubic yards and bags, from the bed's inside length, width and depth.

How this is calculated

Volume is the inside length times the inside width times the depth of soil, for each bed. With feet and inches, the depth is divided by 12 to get feet; cubic feet are divided by 27 to get cubic yards, the unit bulk soil is sold in. With meters and centimeters, the depth is divided by 100.

Bagged soil is sold by the volume printed on the bag, often 1, 1.5 or 2 cubic feet in the US. The number of bags is the volume divided by the bag size, rounded up.

New soil settles over the first weeks, so many gardeners fill slightly above the rim or top up after watering in.

Limits

Rectangular beds of even depth, measured inside the boards. For a round bed, use the diameter for both length and width and multiply the result by 0.785 (pi divided by 4). Soil labeled in quarts or liters: one cubic foot is about 28.3 liters or 25.7 dry quarts.
